This background music starts with a rhythm ‘don don don don’ and it was decided to match the rhythm perfectly with the making of wasabi. “It happened in this order: first the name Takowasa was decided, then he changed from a wasabi maker to a DJ, and then scratching music was put in (laughs). We’ll end things with some comments from Minegishi about DJ Octavio: It’s nothing absolutely major, but if you haven’t completed single-player yet, you may want to simply close the page at this point! SPOILERS BELOW We also picked out a noteworthy excerpt about the final boss. “By the way, a punk rock band Squid Squad is currently popular in the world of squids, but perhaps the trend will shift a bit in the future, and a different band may appear. To close things out, Minegishi left this interesting message for fans: Later the person responsible for accounting was calculating these costs and inquired like ‘What’s this?’ I had the difficulty of explaining, ‘I use them in creating sounds of ink!’ (strained laugh)” I focused on buying things with high viscosity, like borax (an ingredient in making toy slime), starch, solidified jelly and wood glue. So I went shopping alone during work hours (laughs). I thought there was no other choice to have sounds of a liquid with such high viscosity than creating them myself. Not once are we asked to become something we aren’t, and that rules so hard.“Yes. Like much of modern youth, we have moved beyond the need for the labels that older generations sought to burden us with. 'Finding Inkling Girl' Part 3 - Life With Inkling Girl. 'Finding Inkling Girl' Part 2 - Lost in the Nature. The agent you play as during the campaign goes by gender-neutral pronouns too, further cementing the idea that Splatoon never intends for its player characters to be viewed from a cisgendered perspective. Scene Index: 'Finding Inkling Girl' Part 1 - Prologue/Main Title. It can be changed up whenever too, giving each squid a fluid identity that is never once set in stone. You are merely a squid, and that identity takes on whatever gender you want it to. While gendered hairstyles and clothing options do exist in this world, none of them are strictly labelled or describe you as a boy or a girl. Everyone else does too, and this acceptance all starts with the character creator itself. I could don cute skirts, awesome tops, and stylish hats to my heart’s content, and always had the freedom to switch things up to take on new skills but still be assured that I’d look amazing. It isn’t just that these have infiltrated Splatoon, but those who feel welcomed by them have come to call this game home because it represents something special, an inclusive exuberance that nothing else in Nintendo’s library has ever come close to matching. A brief walk around the sprawling hub world greets us with all manner of drawings that have players declaring their love for men and women, crying out for trans rights, or just having fun with modern queer trends that are popular elsewhere. There is something LGBT afoot, and there always has been in the series, but Splatoon 3 takes it to a whole new level. Perhaps it’s the liberating attitude it takes when standing against authority, or the willingness to enable modern youth and provide them with a space to express themselves without compromise, or the presence of characters who are coded in ways that can’t be taken in any other way except fruity. I can’t quite put my finger on why though. Splatoon is one of the queerest games on the planet.
